As I spent time in the schools on this trip I had a growing awareness of their vulnerability and shared my concern with the school leadership. They assured me that everything was ok, but I was not convinced. Shortly after I had returned from my last teaching assignment in November of 2005, I learned that one of our three Bible Schools had been raided by authorities and shut down. Those unable to escape were taken into custody where they were questioned, finger printed and photographed. Fortunately the students were released and sent to their homes across the region.
We knew the other schools would be found so the students were quickly released and the schools closed. I was so disappointed to see this training stop and these students sent home. The emotional impact on me was great because it was like my own kids had been affected. These were students that accepted me as one of their own. We formed memories and emotional bonds to the point where I felt their loss. This really brought persecution home to me and helped me appreciate my freedom.
